Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery Curriculum

Overall Design

Self-guided, asynchronous curriculum. Cognitive material has already been identified and is readily available. Technical component needs guidance, practiced on virtual reality simulator and actual cases. 

In skills lab, one FES session set up within 1st month of R2.

R2

  • Complete min 5 lower scopes on GI mentor prior to sfgh endoscopy rotation
  • GAGE forms filled out on rotation, at least 15 at end of rotation (1 EGD and 1 colo) 

R3

  • Complete min 5 lower scopes on GI mentor prior to gold surgery rotation
  • GAGE forms filled out on rotation, at least 18 at the end of rotation (1 EGD and 1 colo)
  • Lab year FES test 

R4

  • complete min 5 lower scopes on GI mentor prior to gold surgery rotation
  • GAGE forms filled out on rotation, at least 18 at the end of rotation (1 EGD and 1 colo) 

Junior Level (1-3)

During GI rotation as R2

Cognitive

  • Study material outlined in SCORE
  • Self-testing to be done on FES/SAGES site
  • Confirmation to be done Dr. Chern/Kim at the Skills Center

Technical

  • Virtual Reality Simulator Practice at SFGH/ Surgical Skills Center
  • Cases
  • GAGES – at least two forms completed

Documentation 

  • Alexi will use online sign off system from Chern/Kim
  • GAGES form also to be uploaded into resident record 

Senior Level (3-4)

During Colorectal Surgery Rotation

Cognitive

  • Study material outlined in SCORE
  • Self-testing repeated on FES/SAGES site
  • Confirmation to be done Dr. Chern/Kim on Colorectal Service

Technical

  • Virtual Reality Simulator Practice at Surgical Skills Center
  • Cases
  • GAGES – at least two forms completed

Documentation

  • Alexi will use online sign off system from Chern/Kim
  • GAGES form also to be uploaded into resident record

FES testing to be arranged at Stanford at end of rotation
